Getting started
Do I need an account to use alimonia?
No. alimonia is fully usable without an account and without internet. You can create recipes, plan your week and build grocery lists right away. You only need an account if you want to sync your data across multiple devices or share a household with others.
Is alimonia free?
Yes. alimonia is free, ad-free, and has no hidden subscriptions for the core features. You pay nothing to collect recipes, plan meals, and shop.
What happens on first launch?
On first launch you'll see a short intro, then land straight in your recipe overview. From there you can immediately import your first recipe or create one yourself — no sign-up required.
Which devices does alimonia run on?
alimonia is available for iPhone (iOS) and Android. Download it from the App Store or Google Play. With an optional account you can sync your data across your devices.
Recipes & import
How do I import a recipe from a website?
You have three ways:
- Share sheet: Open the recipe in your browser or another app, tap "Share" and choose alimonia. The URL is picked up automatically and the import starts right away.
- Paste a URL: Copy the address and paste it into the import form.
- Manual: Skip the import and type your recipe in directly.
alimonia reads the title, ingredients, steps, servings and times, and shows you a preview before saving where you can adjust everything.
Which sites can I import from?
It works best on sites with structured recipe data (Schema.org / JSON-LD) — most major recipe sites use this. If alimonia can't find structured data, it will at least pre-fill the title and image; you add the ingredients and steps yourself. If something fails, you land in the form and can continue manually.
Are ingredients recognized automatically?
Yes. alimonia splits each ingredient into quantity, unit and name (e.g. "200 g flour" → 200 / g / flour) and assigns it a category. Common units are recognized. If you correct a category, alimonia remembers it for the next import of that ingredient.
Why is the recipe image sometimes missing?
For imported recipes we only store a link to the image on the original site — we don't download it to our own servers, for copyright reasons. If the source later becomes unavailable, alimonia shows a placeholder instead. For recipes you create yourself, you can add your own photo from your gallery or camera.
Can I organize recipes into folders?
Yes, entirely optional. There's always a fixed "All" folder, and you can create additional folders with your own icon and color. A recipe can live in multiple folders. If you delete a folder, the recipe is kept — only the link disappears.
How do I delete a recipe — and can I undo it?
Deleted recipes first move to the trash (accessible via the icon at the top of your library). From there you can restore them at any time. There's no automatic permanent deletion — a recipe stays in the trash until you remove it for good yourself.
Meal planner
How do I plan my week?
The meal planner shows all seven days (Monday through Sunday) stacked vertically. Each day has five fixed meal slots: breakfast, lunch, snack, dinner and a second snack. Add a recipe to a slot — today's date is highlighted in color.
Can I look at past or upcoming weeks?
Yes, without limit. Use the arrows to page as far forward or back as you like; past and future weeks are always kept. A "Today" button brings you back to the current week at any time.
What's the difference between the personal plan and the household plan?
Without a household, you plan your personal plan with your private recipes — visible only to you. If you're in a household, a switch appears at the top to toggle between the personal and household plan. Both are completely independent; the household plan is visible to all members and synced in real time.
Grocery list
Where does the grocery list come from?
alimonia builds it automatically from the recipes in your meal plan. Matching ingredients from different recipes are merged and the list is sorted by category — so you find everything faster in the store.
Can I add my own items to the list?
Yes. Alongside the automatically generated ingredients, you can add your own entries — like dish soap or snacks that aren't in any recipe. Checked-off and manual items are managed directly in the list.
How do I adjust amounts to the number of servings?
Open a recipe and change the serving count — all ingredient amounts recalculate automatically and round cleanly. The planned servings then flow into the grocery list accordingly.
Households & sharing
How do I create a household?
A household requires an account. In the household section, give it a name — you automatically become the owner. From there you can share recipes, meal plan and grocery list together.
How do I invite other people?
As the owner, generate an invite code or link and share it — for example via the system share sheet. Whoever enters the code or opens the link joins the household as a member.
What do household members see?
All active members share the household recipes, the household meal plan and the shared grocery list — synced in real time. Any member can edit household recipes and create folders. Your private recipes stay separate and private.
Can I be in multiple households?
Yes. You can be a member of several households and select an active one in the app. Recipes, meal plans and grocery lists always refer to whichever household is currently active.
What happens if I leave a household?
If you leave a household, you lose access to its shared recipes and plans. As the owner, you transfer ownership to another member first — or the household is dissolved if you're the only member.
Account & sync
Why would I create an account?
An account is optional. You only need it for two things: syncing your data across multiple devices, and using shared households. All core features remain fully available without an account.
What happens to my local recipes when I sign in for the first time?
Your recipes already stored locally are automatically uploaded as private recipes to the cloud on first login. You don't lose anything — your existing collection comes along.
How do I sign in?
Currently via email and password. After registering, you confirm your email address before you can log in. You then choose a display name and a unique @handle.
I forgot my password — what now?
Enter your email address on the login screen and request a reset link. Use the link to set a new password. If no email arrives, check your spam folder or contact support.
How do I delete my account?
You can delete your account in settings. Your private recipes are permanently removed and your profile is deleted. If you own a household with other members, you transfer ownership first. Data stored locally on your device is not affected.
Privacy
Where is my data stored?
By default, exclusively on your device — alimonia is local-first. Only once you create an account is your data additionally synced with our self-hosted server, so it's available across devices and within a household.
Does alimonia track me?
No. alimonia doesn't use advertising tracking and doesn't sell data. Without an account, none of your recipe or plan data ever leaves your device.
Are my recipes visible to others?
No, your recipes are private. They only become visible if you actively share them within a household, or — with a public profile — deliberately publish them via the social features. More in the privacy policy.
Profile & social
What is an @handle?
Your @handle is your unique username (letters and numbers only) that others use to find you. You can change it later as long as the new handle is available — your old handle stays reserved for you for 7 days.
What does a public or private profile mean?
- Public: recipes you share are visible to everyone.
- Private: shared recipes are only visible to confirmed followers. Non-followers only see your name, handle, bio and follower counts.
You can change visibility at any time in your profile settings. The default is public.
Can I follow others and discover recipes?
Yes. The social features let you follow other profiles and view their shared recipes. This is entirely optional — the app works just as well without any social features.
